“A cool roof is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. Cool roofs can be made of a highly reflective type of paint, a sheet covering, or highly reflective tiles or shingles. Standard or dark roofs can reach temperatures of 150°F or more in the summer sun. A cool roof under the same conditions could stay more than 50°F cooler and save energy and money by using less air conditioning.” Source: Department of Energy.

Cool Coatings

Cool coatings are typically white or have reflective pigments that reflect sunlight and its heat. Application helps keep low slope roofing cool which helps prolong the life of the roof, reduces interior heat in the house and offers protection from UV and moisture damage. If you are considering a roof coating on an existing roof, please repair your roof prior to applying a roof coating. Check your low slope roofing warranty prior to applying a coating which may affect the warranty. (Image courtesy of All Weather Surfaces).

Sky Lights & Solar Tubes

Installing a new roof is a great time to install skylights and/or solar tubes. Both let in natural sunlight to illuminate dark spaces in your home and reduce lighting costs. Skylights can be fitted with mini-blinds, UV coating and insulation to control the amount of light and heat. Solar tubes may also be insulated against the effects of humidity and work great in closets, kitchens, hallways, bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Solar Reflective Shingles

If energy costs to cool your home is a concern, consider installing solar reflective shingles. Roof shingles are coated with reflective granules that reduce heat transferred to your home. Solar reflective shingles will help prolong the life of your roof by reducing heat damage over time.

Solar Attic Fans

Solar attic fans work with roof vents to help remove built up attic heat. Solar powered fans use the sun’s energy to operate. (Image courtesy of Hawaii Roofing Supply).

Roof Vents

Installing a roof vent helps move hot air out of your attic. Excess heat may also damage your shingles from the inside out, and some shingle manufacturers require roof vents for their warranty. Considerations include how large your attic space is and your home’s sun exposure. Your Murakami Roofing professional may help you decide and will include in a written estimate.
